According to reports coming out of South Africa, boxer Simiso Buthelezi has passed away following a strange end to a ten-round contest for the WBF African lightweight title.
After knocking his opponent through the ropes Buthelezi then appeared to lose his whereabouts and began throwing punches at air, leading the referee to quickly call a halt to the contest. As reported by Tim Boxeo on Twitter.
Simiso Buthelezi was then taken to hospital where according to various reports he was put into a medically induced coma.
Simiso had just graduated from university with degrees in zoology and botany just two weeks prior to the contest and as the boxing community worldwide sent their thoughts and prayers for Simiso to make a full recovery, unfortunately, it has been reported this morning by Boxing South Africa that Simiso Buthelezi tragically passed away last night on June 7th.
Our thoughts go out to Simiso’s family as boxing mourns another tragic loss of a young life, again another stark reminder of how dangerous the sport can be.
