Ryan Garcia put in a dominant display at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles as he became only the second man to stop experienced Dominican Javier Fortuna.
Garcia took charge of the fight from the first bell, controlling the center of the ring with the jab and straight right hand, it was clear from the first couple of minutes that this could be a long night for Fortuna as he struggled to cope with the speed and sharpness of Garcia.
As the fight progressed both guys started to open up more and let combinations go and in the fourth round Garcia got his breakthrough with a left hook to the body that dropped Fortuna to his knees. Fortuna however made the ten count and survived the round.
In the fifth round, it was more of the same as Garcia looked to waste no time on the success of the previous round as he landed a check hook to the head dropping Fortuna for the second time in the fight. Fortuna not looking in the best of shape somehow manages to survive the round again, but the writing was on the wall.
In the sixth round, Garcia lands a left hook to the head and the fight is over as Fortuna fails to make the count and is knocked out!
The victory will no doubt fuel talks of Garcia v Gervonta Davis again, which is a big fight down the line for both men. At only 23 years of age, however, Garcia has plenty of time to continue to perfect his craft and gain experience and despite all the talk outside, likely will not be rushed into that fight next by Golden Boy Promotions. After the fight Garcia said he will not be moving back down to 135 lbs and will remain at 140 lbs moving forwards.
